Digital Bank Integration Study

The digital bank's custom-built solution kept it agile to evolve but shared no technical synergies with the bank's wider digital channel. The study compared ways to bring it closer to the Avaloq Front Platform (AFP), to strengthen those synergies and lower total cost, without losing the digital bank's differentiating capabilities.

At the centre was an established, independent digital bank whose software had been fully custom-built by a software vendor. This kept it agile and efficient to evolve, but meant it shared no technical synergies with the bank's wider digital channel. Since the bank intended to migrate the rest of its digital banking to the Avaloq Front Platform anyway, the study set out to establish how far the digital bank could be brought closer in, to strengthen synergies and lower total cost, without losing the capabilities that set it apart.

The study engaged in depth with the digital bank's existing implementation and the capabilities of the Avaloq Front Platform, and worked out several migration paths, including the option of changing nothing. Each option was assessed against the same criteria: technical feasibility, implementation effort, risks, synergies and total cost, together with the consequences for the organisation, namely the skills required, operational effort, processes and dependencies. Against these, the study set the differentiating capabilities to preserve, and prototypes tested the most technically uncertain parts.

The result was a holistic basis for decision-making. It allowed senior management to consider the digital channel as a whole and to weigh the consequences of every option, including the status quo, on an informed footing.

Assessing the options by consequence.

Each option, including the status quo, is assessed through four consequence lenses: technical feasibility, economics, organisation, and strategy and risk. From it comes the basis for decision-making for senior management.
